I learned about the Bubonic Plague today in History. As you can imagine,people were over the top paranoid about themselves dying. This resulted in them making these masks with bird like features,such as a long beak. They believed the disease was spread through smell. In which they put posies or daises in the long beak to keep the odor of death out. Next,they thought even a glance at someone infected with the Black Death was enough to contract it to them. They added red crystals to the mask goggles. As you can imagine this is...pretty creepy.
Fun Fact: Ever played/danced to 'Ring Around The Rosey'? Guess what? That song originated from children whom watched people parish.
"Ring Around The Rosie" - Marking the first symptom of the plague,a red mark that appeared on ones skin.
"A Pocket Full Of Posies" - Refers to the posies people put in the masks.
"Ashes to Ashes" - Refers to the suffering and burning coal-coloured skin of the body.
"We All Fall Down" - Meaning we all die from the plague. It was not picky with its victims.
But not to worry-there are very few people who get it nowadays. About 5 reported cases each year,world wide. Because we have cures. Back then in the late 1300's they didn't have much. Also,they might of been able to stop it if they didn't give up bathing! From bathing about once a week to rarely,that might of been a possible spread.
These masks really caught my eye. They were very eerie and gave me a sense death was near. So I drew it,me liking creepy stuff. Learn more:
